"For most of my life, I haven't had a TV, not until recently," said Gorsich, a Molokai High School senior.
Gorsich, 17, the daughter of Daniel and Robin Gorsich, is a National Merit semifinalist, ranking academically in the top 0.5 percent of high school students in the nation.
In her Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test with 80 being the highest score, she received a 79 in mathematics and a 75 in verbal.
Gorsich, who has a 3.7 grade-point average, is taking advanced placement classes in English and calculus in her senior year.
She's the senior class treasurer and a member of the school's mathematics team. She works part time at a health food store and also helps her parents on the family's organic farm.
Daniel Gorsich said he and his wife frequently read to Ilima and their three other daughters at night and the children have turned into voracious readers.
"The big threat here is we're going to take away your library cards," Daniel Gorsich said.
Ilima Gorsich said she's interested in a career in the performing arts and recently acted as a detective in a Halloween play.
"I really enjoyed it. The main thing is I'd like to end up doing something I like," she said.
