Chief operating officer Lenny Klompus said he was delighted with Wuerffel's decision to play in the 51st Hula Bowl. If the Gator quarterback wins the Heisman, he will be the first to play in the annual college all-star game since Notre Dame's Tim Brown.
Wuerffel is currently No. 1 in the nation in passing efficiency with a rating of 185.3. He has completed 153 of 243 passes for 2,572 yards and 28 touchdowns.
He will be the top quarterback on the South squad coached by Florida State's Bobby Bowden, while Detmer will lead the North team, to be coached by Notre Dame's Lou Holtz.
"We expect to announce that BYU's Steve Sarkisian will also be in the game," Klompus said of the nation's No. 2-rated quarterback in passing efficiency. "There are also several players on BYU with local ties, who will be invited to the game."
Former Kahuku High standout Itula Mili already has accepted an invitation to be one of the tight ends. BYU teammates Mark Atuaia, Kaipo McGuire and K.O. Kealaluhi also are expected to play in the game.
"We also have commitments from Colorado's Chris Naeole and Arizona's Joe Salavea and Van Tuinei," Klompus said. "We haven't heard from Washington linebacker Ink Aleaga, but we're hoping he wants to come.
"Getting Danny and Koy to sign on really helps us. We're very happy with our partnership with the American Football Coaches Association because they helped get us many quality players up and down the list."
Hula Bowl officials are close to signing all of the necessary players to compete in the nationally televised game on ESPN. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. on January 19.
