Lyau, Wokasch win half-marathon

Jonathan Lyau and Jeannie Wokasch were the men's and women's division winners in the Val Nolasco half-marathon yesterday at Kapiolani Park.

Lyau pulled away from Andrew Harris to win by two minutes, covering the 13.1 miles in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 45 seconds.

Wokasch, the defending women's champion, finished in 1:23:45, easily outpacing Matz Jorris, in 1:25:10.



TOYS FOR TOTS TENNIS

The annual Toys For Tots Mixed Doubles tennis tournament will be held Dec. 7-8 at Pearl Harbor's Wentworth Courts. The entry fee is $30 per team and the deadline to register is Nov. 9.

The 19th PBA Western Regional will be held at Leeward Bowl Dec. 7 and 8.

Pearl Harbor hosts the Sand Volleyball Challenge for four- and two-person teams in A BB and B divisions, Dec. 14 and 15 at the Wentworth San Volleyball Courts.

Entry fee is $12 per person. Teams that sign up by Dec. 11 receive a 10 percent discount.

FUKUOKA, Japan - American yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono won, but ozekis (champions) Wakanohana and Takanonami suffered upsets on the second day of the 15-day Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament.

Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, who suffered an upset on opening day, charged No. 3 maegashira (senior wrestler) Kotonowaka with hand thrusts, grabbed his foe's belt and forced him out today. Both are 1-1.

Ozeki Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, remained undefeated at 2-0 by sending out No. 1 maegashira (senior wrestler) Daishoho (0-2).

Sekiwake (junior champion) Kaio (2-0) sent out Wakanohana with hand thrusts, and sekiwake Kotonishiki (2-0) put his head on Takanonami's chest and bulldozed him out, leaving both losers at 1-1.

No. 7 maegashira Kyokushuzan charged No. 9 maegashira Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, with hand thrusts, dodged his foe's counterattacks and sent him out for his second victory against no defeats. Konishiki is 1-1.

In lower-division bouts, Hawaii's George Kalima drove out Tokitsunada for his second victory against no defeats; William Hopkins, from Hawaii,

Percy Kipapa (0-1), from Hawaii, was thrown down by Tokitsuumi, and Eric Gasper (0-1), from Hawaii, was pushed out by Wakakinryu.
