Mid-Pac president seeks solutions for neighbors

Q: I live on Malama Way in back of Mid-Pacific Institute. We continually have problems with kids from Mid-Pac speeding and littering on our street and Parker Place. During summer, it's quiet. During school days, it's just hell. The problem is that the kids come as early as 6 a.m. to find on-street parking. They're noisy, and they litter the streets with breakfast wrappings. I've called the school several times, but nothing has been resolved. Can you help?

A: Mid-Pacific President Joe Rice said he was surprised to hear of your complaint because he thought the problems had been alleviated. But he asks you to contact him directly to "deal with any incidents and try to address the bigger problem, not just the fires."

The school already has taken a number of actions, including having security guards monitor the area in the mornings and talking with students about the noise and trash.

Rice also asked the deans of all grade levels to talk to students about the neighbors' concerns and tell them that they needed to respect the environment.

"My understanding (after talking recently with one neighbor) is that we're in a better relationship," Rice said, "but if that's not the case, I'd like to hear about it. Maybe together we can go at it from a different angle."
