Puns’ McLachlin commits to UCLA

By Pat Bigold
Star-Bulletin

Punahou's Parker McLachlin, the top junior golfer in Hawaii, has verbally committed to UCLA.

The 1996 Hawaii High School Athletic Association individual champion said he chose the Bruins over the University of Hawaii, North Carolina, Washington and Santa Barbara.

He said he might also walk on with the Bruins' volleyball team. McLachlin has played three years of varsity volleyball for Punahou.

"I really liked UCLA," said McLachlin. "They're in a rebuilding stage and they have a new coach (Brad Sherfy) I like."

The 17-year-old McLachlin, who won the Junior America's Cup individual title in Vancouver, B.C., last summer, helped lead the Punahou golf team to three straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu titles.

FUJINO KAIMUKI AD

Ray Fujino, who coached Kaimuki High's basketball team to a state title as well as OIA Eastern Division and league titles in 1993, has been named the school's permanent athletic director.

Fujino has appointed Stephen Lee to replace him as varsity head basketball coach. Lee was junior varsity head coach.

In seven years as Kaimuki's head coach, the 35-year-old Fujino compiled a 67-31 record.

"I want to carry on from my predecessor, Dwight Toyama," said Fujino. "He left a high standard for me to follow and a pretty stable environment."

Toyama is now HHSAA executive director.

VOLLEYBALL TONIGHT

OIA volleyball playoff games postponed last night will be played today.

In the girls' playoffs at McKinley, Waianae will meet Roosevelt at 5 p.m. and Farrington will face McKinley at 6 p.m.

In the boys' playoffs at Moanalua, Waianae will play Leilehua at 5 p.m. and Pearl City will take on Moanalua at 6 p.m.

TIEBREAKER CONTROVERSY

Last Friday's Cornell Rule tiebreaker finish between Farrington and McKinley in the quarterfinals of the OIA football playoffs surprised many people.

Why, they ask, was a such hard-fought game decided in such an unconvincing and unexciting format?

The tiebreaker rule allows each team four downs from the 50-yard line. The team with the most yards wins.

McKinley won the tiebreaker on the basis of having gained 19 yards to Farrington's 0. The Tigers ended the game with an interception of a Farrington pass.

The National Federation of State High School Associations rule book recommends that tie-breakers begin from the 10-yard line. But OIA football coordinator Richard Townsend, the Leilehua athletic director, said the federation procedure is optional.

He said that the OIA has followed the Cornell Rule as long as he can remember. The last time the rule was applied was in 1988 in a playoff between Leilehua and Kailua.

Townsend said he prefers the 50-yard line start because it is a quicker solution and therefore safer for athletes substantially fatigued from four quarters of play. The theory is that the longer a player is on the field beyond regulation time, the more chance of his getting hurt.

Under the 10-yard line format, the score could be tied over and over again.

The ILH championship tiebreaker would put teams at the 20-yard line.

Neither Townsend nor Farrington head coach Skippa Diaz favors an overtime period.

Diaz said he'd rather see the OIA adopt the college tiebreaker rule, which puts teams at the 25-yard line. He said it would be better for fans to see a tie resolved by points scored.

TOP-LEVEL TRACK CLINIC

USA Track and Field's Level 1 Coaching Education School will pay a visit to Hawaii for the first time this year.

The clinic, normally held on the mainland, features some of the sports' best instructors. It will be held Nov. 29-30 and Dec. 1.

Successful completion of the clinic course will result in USATF Level 1 coaching certification.

The instructors include:

Glen Sefcik, head track and field coach at Stephen F. Austin University as well as chairman of the USATF Coaching Education Committee.

Kevin McGill, editor of Track Coach, the technical journal of USATF.

"Boo" Schnexnayder, jumps coach at Louisiana State University (six straight NCAA championships).

Ralph Lindeman, chairman of USATF hurdles development committee and head track and field coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

"This will probably be the only time we can bring the complete clinic to Hawaii, until we can get local coaches certified as instructors," said Duncan Macdonald, a clinic organizer.

For more information, contact Macdonald 263-4526 or Joy Margerum at 988-1299.
