But if her classmates hadn't already read it in the Iolani Imua newspaper, they wouldn't have known that the shy student won the trip as the top prize in a student haiku competition. Denysse was selected as the United States winner in the contest sponsored by JAL Foundation. Accompanied by her mother, Ellarene, she joined 14 other international winners and 35 Japan student winners at the World Children's Haiku Camp in Kumamoto, Japan, Aug. 1-6.
Her poem, judged best from 30,000 entries from the United States is:
Sticky seeds slide down my chin
Juicy, sweet, scrumptious.
The Haiku Camp was a week of field trips, Denysse said.
Denysse said she hasn't written any haiku lately. She is more inclined to like classes with reading and writing than to follow in the more technical footsteps of her father, Dalton Sue, an Iolani computer teacher.
