Park’s basketball court is not a car-parking spot

Q: I go regularly to the People's Open Market at McCully District Park. We've been told that we can no longer park on the basketball court because it will be repaved with a special kind of material that will not support cars. Who approved this? The court area was being used for a dual purpose and that should have been taken into consideration. It is hard to find parking in the area.

The basketball court was never meant to be used as a parking lot and after it's repaved, it will be off limits to both cars and skateboarders. "Most courts are meant to be more resilient, which means if you skateboard or drive on them, they will require more maintenance," said Patti Nagao, spokeswoman for the city Parks and Recreation Department.

"In these austere budget times, we want to lessen maintenance costs, so we're asking people to please kokua."

As for parking, she acknowledged on-street parking may be at a premium. But because McCully is such a popular site for the market - one recent weekend attracted more than 1,200 people - "we don't want to give it up because of parking problems."

Many customers just walk to the market, held 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. Wednesdays, she said. For those who drive, Nagao suggested two alternatives on Wednesday: In Palolo, 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., or Kapiolani Park, 10 to 11 a.m.
