World hula festival
to honor Beamer

The World Invitational Hula Festival, "E Ho'i Mai I Ka Piko Hula," begins at 5 p.m. today through Saturday at the Waikiki Shell.

This year's festival honors kumu hula and "living treasure" Nona Beamer. Part of the ticket sale will benefit various Beamer Scholarships.

There will also be Hawaiian food, crafts and products booths.

Admission each day is $7.50 for the lawn, $10 for seats, $15 for loge seats and $25 for VIP seats.

Give a Hoot

Hootie and the Blowfish are performing at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Waikiki Shell.

The musical group's first album, "Cracked Rear View," sold more than 13 million copies. The Blowfish are also avid golfers and played Maui last winter in order to work in a golf game.

Hele on to Helemano

"A Taste of Helemano," a fund-raiser for Opportunities For the Retarded, Inc., takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday through Monday at Helemano Plantation.

There will be food demonstrations with such guest chefs as Alan Wong of Alan Wong's Restaurant, Marilou of Marilou's Filipino Restaurant in Wahiawa, and Dick Allgire of KITV.

There will also be make-up and "folding art" demonstrations, food and craft booths and Hawaiian entertainment. Admission is free.
