in the final minutes

Some ominous signs for the rest of the NAIA volleyball world to consider:

Scary. Very scary.

Especially since BYU-Hawaii earned the Far West-Hawaii's automatic berth into next month's national tournament with relative ease last night.

The Seasiders swept No. 12 Hawaii Pacific, 15-11, 15-5, 15-4, at Cannon Activities Center in 66 minutes, earning BYU-Hawaii a trip to San Diego for the Dec. 4-7 championship event.

Scarier still was the fact that the Seasiders trailed, 3-11, in Game 1. HPU's effective block and tough serving had BYU-Hawaii on the verge of dropping the first set of a match for only the second time all season.

Becky
Laubach:

Six of her match-high 13 kills for the Seasiders and two of her eight blocks came in the final 16 minutes.

"They were really blocking well," said Seasiders junior middle Becky Laubach. "I got blocked a couple of times and it was like, 'Hmmm.' But I have a lot of faith in my team and I knew we could turn it around."

With the speed of a flash flood - and without the warning - the Seasiders turned the momentum their way. A seemingly innocuous block by Laubach and Ana Alves on former BYU-Hawaii player Lei Finau Kaisa started a downpour of 12 unanswered points that culminated in Nina McClinton being stuffed by Laubach and Daniela Carneiro to end Game 1.

"After that, it was hard to come back again," said Kaisa, the 1992 NAIA Player of the Year while playing for the national champion Seasiders. "When we go down (emotionally), we go down hard. We gave them a lot of points because, at that point, I guess we gave up.

"Hopefully, the season's not over."

The Sea Warriors (16-7), based on their ranking, should earn one of the 11 at-large berths issued in two weeks. Out of HPU's seven losses, four have come against BYU-Hawaii.

"I have a good feeling about our team going to the tournament," said first-year HPU coach Tita Ahuna. "I have to believe we're going to go. But we'll have to wait to find out.

"Tonight, we came out fired up and ready to play. We got to 11 (in Game 1) and couldn't score again. I don't know, maybe we got scared. All of a sudden, BYUH burst our bubble. You cannot give anything to BYUH. They'll take it and run."

The Seasiders ran away to a 12-1 lead in Game 2 and a 12-3 margin in Game 3. Laubach had six of her match-high 13 kills in the final 16 minutes while adding two of her eight blocks.

Carneiro finished with 12 kills for BYU-Hawaii. HPU was led by Doreen Fiaui's six kills.

"HPU's block was outstanding in the first game and they were zinging their serves," said Seasiders coach Wilfred Navalta. "We were having some problems and couldn't get our offense running. I just told the team that they had to start playing our style, be aggressive and assertive.

"We had to emotionally and mentally make the adjustment. When we want to, we can play tough. I had to remind them that in 1993 HPU beat us four times during the season, but we beat them in the playoffs. I told them the tables can turn very quickly."

Navalta said the quest for a third straight title, and seventh overall, would continue today. Their previous championships have come in pairs - 1986-87, 1991-92 and 1994-95 - and "we definitely want to make it three in a row for the first time," said Laubach.

"We peak for certain matches and now we'll come down again before we start peaking for the national tournament," said Navalta. "I have a system that will take care of any lack of motivation. They're ranked No. 1, they're undefeated and they're going to practice like they are."
