The Association of Surfing Professionals-sanctioned event kicks off the winter pro season in Hawaii and is the final event on the Hawaiian Pro Am circuit for 1996.

The tournament is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to all ages and ranks.
Added to this year's event is a soft-style division and three-person team kata and team kumite. Other divisions include individual kobudo, kata and kumite.

The newly created event will consist of a 1.5-kilometer rough-water swim, a 30-kilometer mountain-bike course up and down Haleakala, and a 13-kilometer cross-country run.
Among those expected to compete are triathlon great Scott Tinley, Hawaii's top triathlete, Brent Imonen, and cyclo-cross champion Shari Kain.
