Seasiders remain NAIA’s No. 1

Unbeaten Brigham Young University-Hawaii remained the unanimous pick as the No. 1 NAIAwomen's volleyball team in the poll released yesterday.

The Seasiders, who improved to 22-0 last week with victories over Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade, have won 48 matches in a row dating back to last season.

Hawaii Pacific fell from No. 11 in the poll to No. 14. The Sea Warriors are 14-6.



WAHINE SHUTTLE

Shuttle bus service will be provided from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. for fans attending the sold-out University of Hawaii women's volleyball match Saturday against Stanford at the Special Events Arena.

Two buses will follow a route starting at Krauss Hall, across the street from the Parking Structure, traveling via Correa Road and East-West Road to the Bio-Medical Building and returning to Krauss Hall.

Match time is 7 p.m.



XCEL PRO SET

The 13th annual XCEL Pro surf contest will be held Saturday through Nov. 15 at Sunset Beach, with a 13-day waiting period for three days of competition.

The Association of Surfing Professionals-sanctioned event kicks off the winter pro season in Hawaii and is the final event on the Hawaiian Pro Am circuit for 1996.

Kaipo Jaquias is the defending champion.



KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 35th All-Hawaii State Karate Championships will be held Sunday at Aliamanu Military Recreation Gym.

The tournament is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to all ages and ranks.

Added to this year's event is a soft-style division and three-person team kata and team kumite. Other divisions include individual kobudo, kata and kumite.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a $10 fee for Hawaii Karate Congress members, $15 for non-HKC members. Admission is $3. For information, call Clarice Hirano at 593-1153.



AQUATERRA OFF-ROAD TRIATHLON

Top international triathletes and professional mountain bikers will compete in the inaugural Aquaterra Off-Road Triathlon World Championship Sunday at Wailea, Maui.

The newly created event will consist of a 1.5-kilometer rough-water swim, a 30-kilometer mountain-bike course up and down Haleakala, and a 13-kilometer cross-country run.

Among those expected to compete are triathlon great Scott Tinley, Hawaii's top triathlete, Brent Imonen, and cyclo-cross champion Shari Kain.

ESPN'S Hawaiian Sports Adventure will televise the event.
