Furtado, who entered the sixth grade this year at Kalama Intermediate School in Makawao, Maui, was the student body treasurer at Pukalani Elementary School and helped in sales of kalua pig and T-shirts for the Parent Teachers Association.
She and other student officers also initiated fund-raisers for the student body, including two school dances. They charged 25 cents admission to students to pay for pretzels, potato chips and punch.
"It's kind of fun when you know you're helping the school out, even though it will be for the next year's kids," Furtado said.
Pukalani Principal Ruth Silberstein said Furtado knows how to work with people. "She's a very responsible student and leader," Silberstein said.
Furtado, the daughter of Craig and Johanna Furtado, also is a good student. In the fifth grade, she maintained a 3.8 grade point average.
She attends after-school mathematics classes conducted at Pukalani Elementary by the Kumon Educational Institute and is learning to play the piano. She also plays golf and soccer.
Furtado looks at her fund-raising work with a long view. Her 7-year-old brother, Ryan, attends Pukalani Elementary.
"My brother will be there so you know it will be better for him," she said.
