Wahine on honor roll

The University of Hawaii women's basketball team has been named to the inaugural Academic Top 25 honor roll, recognizing the nation's highest NCAA Division I team grade point averages for the 1995-96 school year.

The Wahine, coached by Vince Goo, had a team GPA of 3.21, tying them for 18th place in the poll announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association yesterday. Hawaii tied with Kent State, Nebraska and North-Carolina-Greensboro.

The top GPA was 3.475 by Rider University. The other nationally ranked WAC teams were Wyoming, second at 3.37, and Utah, 15th at 3.24.



HPU TIES ON ROAD

At Newhall, Calif., Cesar Jube scored his 23rd goal of the season to help Hawaii Pacific University to a 2-2 tie with The Master's College in a men's soccer match yesterday.

Marcelo Rodriguez gave HPU a 2-1 lead just before halftime, but Master's sweeper Andrew Williams hit the tying goal in the 84th minute.

The Sea Warriors (14-1-1) and the Mustangs (12-3-2) share the lead in the Far West Independent Region.



ORDONIO IN FRONT

Larry Ordonio shot a 72 yesterday to take the first-round lead in the Hawaii State Seniors Open golf tourney at the Leilehua Course. Allen Yamamoto is next with a 73, followed by Larry Lee who shot 74.



GRAND PRIX TENNIS DEADLINE

Friday is the deadline for entries in the 44th Dillingham Grand Prix Tennis Championships, Nov. 2-3 and Nov. 9-11 at the Punahou School courts.

Play is in men's and women's open singles and doubles. The Hawaii Grand Prix Circuit event features the state's top players, with pros competing for $5,000 in prize money.
