THE sports world according to Fitz: Try listening to
Fall Classic on the radioIf you are a true baseball fan, try to catch some of the World Series on the radio (KGU 760-AM) with Vin Scully calling the game.
Scully can still paint a baseball picture over the airwaves like no one else, not to mention entertain you.
Here are just two examples from yesterday's game in Atlanta:
After the Yankees were upset about a ball-four call with David Cone on the mound, Don Zimmer was yelling at home plate umpire Tim Welke from the New York bench.
But the dugouts are so far from home plate that Scully remarked: "That's like a guy in the balcony winking at a showgirl."
Then he told this story, without missing a single pitch on the play-by-play: Willie Mays made a great catch in a game against the Dodgers and completed a game-ending double-play by throwing out Billy Cox at home plate. After the game, Dodgers manager Chuck Dressen was still fuming. Asked what he thought of the play, Dressen snapped: "Let's see him do it again.'"
The added advantage of listening to the remaining games on the radio is that you don't have to play the ridiculous delayed-telecast game, this time brought to you by the knuckleheads at KHON-TV.
What a nice community service of KHON to start the game four or five hours late, when not only everyone on the island knows the final score, but many school-age children can't watch the entire game because it runs too late - especially packed with extra commercials.
At least the sports bars that invested in satellite dishes, which are now all over Oahu, will benefit.
But it is still a backward and embarrassing practice, especially with the number of VCRs out there. As usual, money wins out over common sense in local TV land.
RAINBOW FOOTBALL: It was nice for the diehard fans who sat through the rain that the UH football team finally woke up and beat UNLV last Saturday.
But the Rainbows still played a poor game overall and will get clobbered by Air Force this weekend.
It's a rebuilding year, though, so the team will take a victory against anyone, especially the Rebels, who are in a similar position.
But I don't understand why head coach Fred vonAppen continues to stick with senior Glenn Freitas at quarterback when freshman Josh Skinner could be gaining so much valuable experience.
I know that Stanford transfer Tim Carey has been handed next year's starting job on a platter, which is fine.
But what if Carey gets hurt? And when the senior transfer leaves after one season, UH will be looking for a third different starting quarterback in three years - hardly the way to rebuild an important part of your program.
MORE WORLD SERIES: Don't be surprised to see the Yankees bounce back and win again today after yesterday's crucial victory.
Winning two out of three in Atlanta would send the series back to New York, where anything could happen.
The Braves are still in the driver's seat with John Smoltz and Greg Maddux pitching so well. But at least David Cone gave Yankee fans some hope - and averted a four-game sweep.
AWESOME GOLFER: Tiger Woods' performance on the PGA Tour so far is absolutely stunning.
At last year's Senior Skins at Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island, Jack Nicklaus told me - and everyone else - that Woods is the best young player he has ever seen.
Nicklaus doesn't throw out compliments like that very often. And, as usual, he is right on the money about Woods.
You can bet that the Hawaiian Open folks are already doing their best to get Woods on the tee at the Waialae Country Club next February.
