Ex-UH star Chase
works in California

QUESTION: What ever happened to University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball standout Sarah Chase who left school after her junior season in 1994?

ANSWER: After a stellar prep volleyball career at Pacifica High in Orange County, Calif., Sarah Chase became Big West Freshman of the Year in 1992 as a middle blocker for the Wahine.

Armed with a disarming smile and a devastating ability to stuff opponents, Chase quickly became a popular member of the team and an All-American three years running.

But before her senior season in 1995, she flunked out of school.

Her troubles brought her criticism and support from fans.

"I just thought it was a shame that she let her academics fall by the wayside," said Rainbow Wahine volleyball coach Dave Shoji.

"She took care of business on the volleyball court. She's a bright person. I think somewhere down the road she'll see fit and go back and get her degree."

Today, the 6-footer is back home in California and working in her parents' X-ray lab, Shoji said. "She wants to go back and play volleyball somewhere, either on the beach, indoors or somewhere," said Shoji.
