Investing in energy

Hawaii-born Dennis E. Fern takes over as president of Kukui Inc., the Texas-based company which handles the energy-related investments of Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate. Kukui, organized in March 1992, is a for-profit subsidiary of Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center Inc.

Kukui has partial ownership of 250 coal-bed methane wells in Alabama, Colorado, and New Mexico. Fern has been president of Kukui Operating Company, which does the exploration.

"We're looking for more opportunities," Fern said.

A 1966 graduate of Punahou School, Fern earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics at Willamette University in Oregon. He is one of four sons of Nani and Ellwood Fern.

Dennis Fern is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a director of Parents And Children Together (PACT).
