’Tis the season

‘EAST-WEST’ START

The Honolulu Symphony opens its MasterWorks concerts with an "East-West" performance of Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony" 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The new music director, Samuel Wong, will conduct; soprano Jungwon Park, mezzo soprano Lorna Mount, tenor Laurence Paxton and bass baritone John Mount are featured. Also performing are 200 musicians from the Toho College of Music in Japan and the Oahu Choral Society, directed by Timothy Carney. Tickets are $10 to $45. Information: 545-4000.

An open rehearsal for the concert will be noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Concert Hall.



CLASSIC & NEW SERIES

MasterWorks presents 10 concerts in pairs at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Season tickets are $44 to $396, depending on the number of concerts selected. Tickets, $10 to $45.

BHP Hawaii sponsors Pau Hana at the Hawaii Theatre, with "happy hour" at 4:45 p.m. before the one-hour concerts. Series tickets are $65; single tickets, $20. A beverage is included in the ticket price.

Mozart & Moore features Joe Moore of KHON Fox 2 as host and special guest conductor at the Hawaii Theatre. Series tickets are $75 to $92; single tickets $28 to $40.

Pops presents five concerts in pairs at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Season tickets are $50 to $180; single tickets $15 to $45.

Ohana, sponsored by the Bank of America, brings music alive for children and families at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Children can enter the "Instrument Petting Zoo" at 10 a.m. and learn about musicians and their instruments. Series tickets are $30 to $40; single tickets, $12 to $15.

In addition to series tickets, a Select Six voucher for admission to any six of the 1996-97 subscription concerts is available for $105. Some seating restrictions. Call 538-8863.



CONCERTS

A New Era Begins: MasterWorks, 4 p.m. Oct. 20 and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22, with Music Director Samuel Wong. Pianist Christopher O'Riley will perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, op. 58. Program includes Dvorak's "Carnival" Overture and Mahler's Symphony No. 4 in D major.

"Symphonic Dances": MasterWorks, 4 p.m. Oct. 27 and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29, with pianist Michael Stern, permanent guest conductor of the Orchestre National de Lyon in France, and cellist Borislav Strulev. Program includes Stravinsky's Concerto in E flat, "Dumbarton Oaks"; Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 in D major; and Rachmaninoff's "Symphonic Dances," op. 45.

"Symphonic Dances": Pau Hana, 5:45 p.m. Oct. 30, with cellist Borislav Strulev and conductor Michael Stern. Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major and Rachmaninoff's "Symphonic Dances," op. 45.

The Magic of the Flute: Mozart & Moore, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 and 2, with Ransom Wilson as guest conductor and soloist in Vivaldi's Flute Concerto No. 3, "The Goldfinch." Program includes Dieter's Concerto for Two Flutes, Beethoven's "Coriolan" Overture and Mozart's "La Betulia Liberata," K. 118, and Symphony No. 41, "Jupiter," K. 551.

"Romeo and Juliet": MasterWorks, 4 p.m. Nov. 17 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19, with Samuel Wong and actor Richard Chamberlain. Chamberlain will read from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," which inspired interpretations by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Berlioz and Bernstein ("West Side Story" suite).

"Romeo and Juliet": Pau Hana, 5:45 p.m. Nov. 20, with conductor Stuart Chafetz. Tchaikovsky's and Prokofiev's versions of Shakespeare's tale.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and the Broadway Express: Pops, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 22 and 23, with baritone Byron Nease, soprano Jeannie Lehman and Skitch Henderson, music director of the New York Pops. Selections from "Evita," "The Phantom of the Opera," "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "Sunset Boulevard."

"Where in the World of Music is Carmen San Diego?": Ohana, 11 a.m. Nov. 30. Gary Sheldon will conduct a musical mystery program with Inspector Clue-Not.

Oliveira plays Mendelssohn: MasterWorks, 4 p.m. Dec. 1 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3, with Samuel Wong. Violinist Elmar Oliveira will perform Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64. Program includes Dvorak's Symphony No. 8 in G major, op. 88, Joon-Il Kang's Concerto for Samul Nori and Orchestra "Madang," and the world premiere of "Urban Primitive" by J. Mark Scearce, composer-in-residence at the University of Hawaii.

A Christmas Spectacular: Pops, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11 and 4 p.m. Dec. 15, with the Brothers Cazimero and conductor Aaron Mahi. New arrangements of holiday favorites.

"The Magic Horn": Ohana, 11 a.m. Jan. 4. Conductor Stuart Chafetz and the Magic Circle Mime Co. will present a magical tale.

Mozart and Sibelius: MasterWorks, 4 p.m. Jan. 5 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 7, with Joseph Silverstein, music director of the Utah Symphony, as guest conductor and violin soloist. Încludes Berlioz' "Benvenuto Cellini" Overture, Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major, K. 218, and Sibelius' Symphony No. 2 in D major, op. 43.

Mozart's Piano: Mozart & Moore, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 10 and 11, with Haesun Paik joining conductor Samuel Wong for Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20, K. 466. Program includes "Idomeneo" Overture; Symphony No. 32, K. 318; and Symphony No. 40, K. 550.

Mozart and Haydn: Mozart & Moore, 7:30 p.m. March 21 and 22, with the Oahu Choral Society and its director Timothy Carney. Încludes Bach's "Magnificat," Haydn's Mass in D minor, "Lord Nelson," and Mozart's overtures "Abduction from the Seraglio" and "Cosi fan tutte."

Keith Ikaia-Purdy returns: MasterWorks, 4 p.m. March 23 and 7:30 p.m. March 25, with the tenor from Hawaii who toured with the Vienna State Opera, and Enrique Diemecke, music director and principal conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico and the Flint Symphony in Michigan. Program includes arias by Puccini and Verdi and works by Wagner - Prelude to Act II from "Lohengrin," Prelude and Liebesod from "Tristan und Isolde" and the Overture and Venusberg from "Tannhauser."

The Drama of Wagner: Pau Hana, 5:45 p.m. March 26, with conductor Enrique Diemecke. Selections from "Lohengrin," "Tristan und Isolde" and "Tannhauser."

The Magic of Gershwin: Pops, 7:30 p.m. March 28 and 29, with conductor, arranger and pianist Peter Nero. Classics, including "Rhapsody in Blue" and "An American in Paris."

Ravel's "Bolero": MasterWorks, 4 p.m. April 6 and 7:30 p.m. April 8, with George Pehlivanian, principal guest conductor of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. Pianist Anton Kuerti will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major, K. 503, and his own Concertino for piano, flute, violin and string orchestra. Program includes Chabrier's "Suite Pastorale."

Evening with Judy Collins: Pops, 7:30 p.m. April 11 and 12, with Collins and conductor Matt Catingub. "Amazing Grace," "Both Sides Now," "Send in the Clowns" and other songs.

"Carnival of the Animals": Ohana, 11 a.m. April 19. Chafetz will also conduct the Bob Brown Puppets for a grand fantasy with a dancing dinosaur skeleton, an ice-skating swan and fluorescent fish.

Verdi's "Requiem": MasterWorks, 4 p.m. April 20 and 7:30 p.m. April 22, with Samuel Wong. Featuring the Oahu Choral Society, directed by Timothy Carney.

Hae Jung Kim plays Liszt: MasterWorks, 4 p.m. April 27 and 7:30 p.m. April 29, with Laurence Leighton Smith, conductor laureate of the Louisville Orchestra and conductor-in-residence at Yale, and pianist Hae Jung Kim. Kim will perform Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E flat major. Program includes Big Island composer Jerre Tanner's Aukele Suite "The Swimmer" and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1, op. 10.

Liszt and Shostakovich: Pau Hana, 5:45 p.m. April 30, with pianist Hae Jung Kim and conductor Laurence Leighton Smith. Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E flat major and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1, op. 10.

Harmony on Tap: Pops, 7:30 p.m. May 2 and 3, with Matt Catingub and the Manhattan Rhythm Kings, from the Broadway cast of "Crazy for You."

"Fountains and Pines of Rome": MasterWorks, 4 p.m. May 11 and 7:30 p.m. May 13, with Samuel Wong, violinist Gil Shaham and the Royal Hawaiian Band, directed by Aaron Mahi. Shaham will perform Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major, op. 77. Program includes Respighi's "Fountains of Rome" and "Pines of Rome" and Brahms' "Hungarian Dance" No. 1 in G minor.



OPEN REHEARSALS

Sponsored by a City and County grant, open rehearsals for the MasterWorks concerts will be 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 26, Nov. 16, April 5 and April 26; 7 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 30 and April 17; 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 4; and 10 a.m. to noon March 20. Rehearsal date for "The Fountains and Pines of Rome" to be announced.
