Scott McCormack, Rep. Patsy Mink
Spiegel shoots spring chic in isles
WINTER is right around the corner on the mainland, but you'd never know it by watching all the chic fashion designers' shows on TV. They're all promoting their spring and summer fashions, many of which are so bizarre you'll never see them except on a runway. Where better to shoot summery fashions than in Hawaii, as we bask in 90 degree temperatures? That's what the folks at Spiegel Catalog are doing. They have a production crew and models here for a week of shooting to prepare people for next spring's designs. Scott McCormack was delighted to provide one scenic locale - the Harbor Court condominium pool with its dramatic view of Honolulu Harbor. The pool there is dubbed the "Infinity Pool," because it seems to go on forever - much like winter in Buffalo, Duluth and the rest of the mainland ...
MEANWHILE, enjoying Indian summer in San Francisco is ProComm's Melissa Chang, there visiting Ad2 Honolulu transplants Glen Shannon and Ann Kim. They all went dancing at the hot new DNA, a SoMa (South of Market St.) nightclub co-owned by Rob Schneider, who'll brook no "Men Behaving Badly" there. The three were told they'd missed recent celeb visits by Huey Lewis, Chris Farley and Kelsey Grammer ...
ALSO SanFran bound is comic Frank DeLima, who'll be returning to one of his favorite venues, the Chinatown Holiday Inn. It's officially called Holiday Inn, Financial District, but if you mention that over there you get a collective "Huh?" The considerable expatriate Hawaii community living in the Bay Area invariably turns out to hear the Portuguese Prince in person ...
THE First Night Hawaii people were thrilled to see the smiling and radiant 85-year-old Junichi Muranaka on the front page of Tuesday's Star-Bulletin, mainly because he was wearing a First Night Honolulu T-shirt. First Night's "Summer Follies" will be staged this New Year's Eve at the wonderfully restored Hawaii Theatre ...
Green eggs and Hampton
IF you're fond of puns, you'll probably enjoy the artworks of Joe Hampton, whose one-man show, "False Expectations About Reality: A Truism," will be on view through October at Ramsay Gallery downtown. His puns are often visual, witness "Mouseoleum," which shows a toy mouse lying in state, having found its niche. Other intriguing titles in Hampton's collection: "Virgin Transformer," "Finnish Nails," "Prehensive-Posthensile," "Occidental Chopsticks" and "Frugal Horn." ...
SUDDENLY Susan is missing - that would be Susan Sarandon. But the "Louise" who was a companion to Susan's "Thelma," Geena Davis, is lying low in the islands with her director/husband Renny Harlin ... The author of "Awakenings," Oliver Sacks, will be on Lanai next week as guest lecturer Oct. 26 at the Lodge at Koele. While the Oxford-educated neurologist-turned-author is best known for the book whose film version starred Robin Williams, Sacks also wrote "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat." Sigmund Freud, where are you? ...
LA MER sort of scored a slam dunk in the October issue of Gourmet magazine in its subscribers poll. The French restaurant in the Halekulani not only headed up the list of the Top 20 restaurants in Honolulu, it also won for top service, ambience, presentation and wine list. Roy's Restaurant, at No. 2, nosed out La Mer for "Top Food" and Sunset Grill was named "Tops for Business." ...
The Women
WOMEN in the news: If Rep. Patsy Mink is reelected to Congress, and it's likely she will, she'll be its longest-serving woman member with 18 years and three months of previous service ... What's Pat Saiki up to these days? She's not running for office this time around, but Saiki's walking door to door helping candidate Sam Aiona campaign for a State House seat ... The British tabloids love a good pun and when Jerry Hall announced she was splitting from Rolling Stones leader Mick Jagger, one paper headlined it, "Hall Over Now." ...
