Making a difference in Waianae

A desire to work in a multi-cultural rural experience led Dr. Richard B. Friedman from Wisconsin to his new post as medical director at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

"I want to serve in a rural area where I can make a difference," said Friedman, professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin for the past 25 years.

He is a nationally known pioneer in the area of "medical informatics," the use of computer technology to keep up with patients' needs.

"This (rural area) is where tele-medicine can be the most valuable," Friedman said. "We have a grant proposal for computers in home health care using links through cable television."

Friedman, a graduate of Princeton University and Cornell Medical School, is board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine.
