Con Con is necessary when
our politicos fail

Jerome Manis argues in his Oct. 3 letter that we shouldn't have a Constitutional Convention because people hate immigrants, homosexuals, single mothers, the aged, the homeless, the mentally ill and others.

Manis' arguments reveal a lack of objectivity on this issue. He doesn't offer any research or data to support his claims. The Con Con issue should be considered with objectivity and balance.

Right now, there is no sufficient legislation to prevent same-sex marriage from becoming legal. The vast majority of residents oppose same-sex marriage, so they lobbied their legislators to put an amendment on the ballot that would give them the option of defining marriage as between a man and a woman. Senators failed to respond to the urgent requests of the voters.

This situation is exactly why voters should have the option of a Con Con - when their representatives drop the ball, the voters can get a direct line into government.

Abercrombie should quit
trying to scare people

First we were bombarded by an Abercrombie advertisement showing a sick elderly person, with Abercrombie saying that his opponent Orson Swindle was out to cut Medicare which would result in lack of proper care for our loved ones. Certainly untrue in view of the fact that the Republican budget proposal results in an increase in spending in Medicare per recipient from about $4,500 to about $7,500 by 2001.

Now we are seeing a second Abercrombie ad that implies that Orson Swindle is in favor of approving laws that encourage criminals to shoot police officers. An outrageous claim in view of the fact that the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers is endorsing Swindle.

Why can't Neil Abercrombie stop resorting to scare tactics and spreading untruths? Is he afraid to run on his record in Congress?

Swindle has qualifications that
are truly impressive

Orson Swindle is an excellent choice over Neil Abercrombie in Hawaii's congressional race.

Abercrombie majored in sociology with instructorship at the University of Hawaii. No doubt he is a good man, but his accomplishments are minimal. Four national organizations, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, rate him almost at the bottom of 435 congressional members. Also, homosexuals support him.

In comparison, Swindle has a bachelor of science in industrial management from Georgia Tech. He was a Marine Corps fighter pilot, was shot down in Vietnam and tortured for more than six years in prison. Later, he attended Florida State University for his masters in business administration.

He was a director of the Farmers Home Administration in Georgia, followed by four years as an assistant secretary of commerce in the Reagan administration.

The other 49 states would be fortunate to have Swindle represent them in Congress. He is neat in appearance, has the necessary education, government experience and proven loyalty (a lieutenant colonel with 20 military decorations), and he is against homosexual marriage.

Hawaii needs Swindle in Washington.

Voters are smarter now so
they won't back GOP

Since Orson Swindle told Hawaii voters, after the last election, that we were not smart enough to know how to vote, our education has certainly been enhanced by the vitriolic teachings of the Republican majority in Congress.

Now, more than ever, we must show that we are smart enough not to vote for Swindle and his equals.

By the way, has Bob Dole ever held a job in private industry? We find his only employment record has been as a member of a legislative body, state and federal.

Is that what is meant by "feeding at the public trough?"
