Despite layoff, Aztecs
crush 'Bows, 56-8

SAN DIEGO -- Despite not playing a game since Sept. 21, the Aztecs showed no sign of rust during Friday night's 56-8 victory over the University of Hawaii before a Jack Murphy Stadium crowd of 27,098.

It was the 15th consecutive Western Athletic Conference loss on the road for the Rainbows, who haven't won a league game on the mainland since Oct. 31, 1992.

''We couldn't stop anything in the first half,'' UH head coach Fred vonAppen said. ''Offensively, we had a couple of drives that looked respectable, but we swapped sides in the second half and couldn't make an inch. ...

''All we can do is compliment San Diego State, as well we should, and go back to the drawing board. We don't have any choice but to go back and get better. We have to take a good look at this film and find out where we erred in the game plan as a staff and where we erred as players.''

The only bright spot was Hawaii's 87-yard touchdown drive in the first half that snapped a 13-quarter scoring Rainbow scoring drought.

Thanks to UH Wahine,
Lakers WATCH Showtime

It was Showtime at the Special Events Arena again Friday night. Only this time, it was the Los Angeles Lakers who were watching the show.

With Kobe Bryant, Rumeal Robinson and Trevor Wilson among the 7,851 fans in attendance, the top-ranked Hawaii women's volleyball team put on a clinic against overmatched Wyoming, 15-2, 15-2, 15-5. The Wahine needed just 66 minutes to run their records to 16-0 overall and 5-0 in Western Athletic Conference play and hold the Cowgirls (8-10, 2-10) to their lowest offensive total in the last 19 years of the program.

Who needs Shaq when you've got Angelica Ljungquist leading Hawaii's WAC Attack? Ljungquist turned in her fourth triple-double of her career with 18 kills, 10 digs and 10 blocks, becoming the Wahine's all-time career leader in block assists during a 7-0 run that closed out the match.

Ljungquist broke Suzanne Eagye's mark of 502 set during her career in 1984-87. With seven assist blocks last night, the senior blocker has 505.

Waianae clinches tie
as it downs Waipahu, 26-15

The Waianae Seariders (5-0) remained unbeaten and clinched a tie for the OIA Red title as they amassed 325 rushing yards to defeat Waipahu, 26-15, Friday night at Aloha Stadium.

Because both Waianae and Farrington won Friday night, next week's showdown between the teams at Waianae takes on even more significance. The Governors (4-1) can grab a share of the conference title if they beat the Seariders.
