School medicine policy
does not apply in Hawaii
QUESTION: I keep reading about school policies on the mainland that require all medicines, including over-the-counter remedies like Midol and Advil, to be brought in by parents and given to the nurse, who dispenses them to students. Several mainland schoolchildren have been suspended for failing to follow those rules.
Does the Department of Education have similar rules here?
ANSWER: No, that type of situation couldn't happen here, said Greg Knudsen, Department of Education spokesman.
There is no department requirement that school officials be the only people who can dispense over-the-counter painkillers. The only provision that could result in suspension or expulsion deals with illegal substances.
