Iwakuni bon dance group
accepts new members

QUESTION: We have seen the Iwakuni bon dance group at the downtown hoolaulea and at the First Night celebration. We think they are great. People in the audience not only enjoyed watching them, but also had a good time joining in with them.

Is the group taking new members? How do we contact them? They are not listed in the phone book.

ANSWER: Yes, the group is always willing to take new members, said Alan Inaba, its vice president. There are no special membership requirements. You can call Inaba at 949-3939 or Katherine Kunichika at 841-7854 for more information.

With 186 members, the group, whose formal name is Iwakuni Odori Aikoki, is the largest bon dance group in the state. The ages of its members range from 7 to 96. Practices, held at the Palolo Hongwanji, begin in April with the bon dance season running from June through September.

The club, which was begun more than 40 years ago, will be honored Wednesday by the City Council for efforts in perpetuating the Japanese culture in the islands. The president of the organization is Roy Hamasaki.
