Pac-Five senior Matt Stevens and Punahou sophomore Eri Macdonald are undefeated in cross-country races this year and Macdonald has not tasted defeat in her varsity career.
And that held true even against runners from Dana Hills, a perennial California power in the sport.
Dana Hills swept the boys' and girls' team races.
But Stevens, who has not lost a cross-country race in Hawaii since 1993, fended off an early challenge from sophomore standout Devin Lindahl and won the boys' individual medal in 16 minutes and 21.6 seconds over the three-mile course. He was 55.3 seconds ahead of Dana Hills' Juan Diaz and about a minute and 10 seconds ahead of Lindahl.
He beat a formidable challenger in Lindahl, who had the fastest freshman time in California for the 880 meters last year: 1:56.4.
It was the second time Stevens has come out on top in a race with Dana Hills. He also did it in 1994.
Macdonald, using her fluid stride, held off an early try by Dana Hills senior Laura Kroninger to win in 11:51.9 over the two-mile girls' course. Her margin of victory was 11 seconds.
Dana Hills head boys' coach Tim Butler, who has sent his share of runners on to the NCAA, said he thinks Stevens has the makings of a good Division I runner.
"He has very good form," said Butler. "He runs upright, has good stride length. He definitely has the right body type."
Stevens has not said where he'll go to college. But with a 4.0 grade point average at Hawaii Baptist Academy, his range of college admission possibilities is vast.
Punahou finished second to Dana Hills in both varsity races and the girls' junior varsity. The Buffanblu won the boys' JV race.
Wins over second-place Pearl City (5-1 in both boys' and girls' divisions) last week were critical.
Counting the football team (4-0), Waianae currently has three unbeaten fall varsity programs.
Searider boys' volleyball coach Michellene Nua said her players are especially "hungry" this year after being shut out of the state tournament last season.
"It tore them apart because we usually go to the state," said Nua.
Nua's key players are 6-foot-1 senior middle blocker Matthew Denison, 5-5 sophomore setter Roger Cordeiro (a backup last year), 5-8 senior outside hitter Toby Luna and 5-11 sophomore outside hitter Robert Silva.
Nua has only two seniors, so her best years are yet to come.
Thia Palakiko, a former University of Hawaii Wahine player, coaches the Waianae girls. They're sparked by senior 5-8 outside hitter Kekui Fletcher.
Farrington and McKinley are 5-0 atop the OIA Eastern Division girls' race. Kahuku (5-0) leads the Eastern Division boys' race.
In the ILH, Punahou and Kamehameha are neck and neck in both the boys' and girls' divisions.
