Taking the hazards out of waste

Jane Sherman's job is to help businesses and government agencies handle hazardous waste. She takes over the clients of M&E Pacific, one of the state's largest engineering firms.

"I'll be focusing on bringing the remedial technologies to our clients, matching the site characteristics," Sherman said.

Common methods include baking with high heat, injecting air into water to force out contaminants, and using microbes to eat the contaminants.

Sherman worked seven years for Radian International, mostly in Sacramento, Calif., and came to Hawaii in August 1994. She has managed several large-scale remedial projects, including groundwater, soil, and sub-surface water investigations.

She earned a bachelor's degree in geology at the University of California at Davis.

M&E Pacific is a wholly owned subsidiary of Metcalf & Eddy Inc. and has been in Hawaii since 1959.
