Perkins takes longboard title

BIDART-GUETHARY, France - Hawaii's Bonga Perkins kept the Oxbow World Longboard Championship title in Hawaii by beating Brazilian Alex Salazar in 6- to 8-foot surf yesterday.

Perkins defeated Hawaii's Duane Desoto and Zane Aikau on his way to the finals.

Three-time world champion Rusty Keaulana of Hawaii was upset in the early rounds.



NISHIMOTO WINS KAUAI OPEN

Dan Nishimoto won the Kauai Open over the weekend with a 54-hole score of 214, beating Brian Sasada and Tommy Hines by one stroke.

Jonathan Ota won the championship flight by three strokes over Guy Yamamoto. Ota finished with a 219 to Yamamoto's 222.

The tournament was held at the Prince, Kiele and Wailua golf courses on the Garden Island.



HOY DEFEATS DORIAN

At Praia Do Cabedelo, Portugal, Australia's Matt Hoy won the Coca-Cola Figueira Pro surf meet Sunday when he defeated Hawaii's Shane Dorian, 32.50 to 22.25, in solid 4- to 6-foot surf.

The victory was worth $20,000 to Hoy and $9,000 to Dorian.



BELL THE FASTEST

Tony Bell captured first place in the Paul Mitchell In-Line X-Press five-kilometer race Sunday with a time of 6 minutes, 41 seconds at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Malia Kilpinen won the women's division in 7:10.

Bell also won the "Fastest Speed Skater' in the state title by winning a 150-meter sprint. Karl Brown was second and Kilpinen third.



WAHINE PLACE SECOND

At Stockton, Calif., the University of Hawaii's Rachel Leber finished fifth to lead the Wahine to a second-place finish in the University of the Pacific Invitational cross-country meet Saturday.

Sarah Iley of San Jose State A took individual honors with a time of 18 minutes, 55 seconds for the five-kilometer event.

Leber timed was 19:27.

San Jose State A had 20 points with UH next with 35 points.



IMONEN SETS RECORD

Kailua's Brent Imonen beat his own course record by seven seconds in winning the Dollar Rent A Car Diamond Head Biathlon Saturday in a time of 57 minutes, 53 seconds.

The course consisted of a 2-K swim followed by a 10-K run.

Brigette Huber was the first women to finish. She was clocked in 1:08:10.



LIU, ORNSTEDT ADVANCE

At San Diego, Yu-Hsien Liu and Anneli Ornstedt of the Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's tennis team have qualified for the Small College Championships in Memphis, Oct. 23-27.

Liu defeated Yael Tobi, U.S. International, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, Saturday to win the women's singles title at the Rolex Championships.

Ornstedt then paired with Lui to win the doubles title, beating Jen Gutierrez and Sonje Herke, Westment College, 6-1, 6-1.



HILO WINNERS

Steve Gonzales of the University of Hawaii at Hilo won the men's division of the UHH Invitational cross country meet Saturday.

He covered the 10-K course in 31 minutes, 49:77 seconds.

Chaminade's Brandon Nicolaus was runner-up in 32:37.92.

Sylvia Fisher of Hawaii Pacific easily won the women's 5-K race in 17:30.76. Stephanie Goaslind of BYUH was second in 18:43.47.



KOSTKA, CHANG WIN

Randall Kostka won the men's division of the People's Ship 5-K road race Saturday at Pearl Harbor in a time of 18 minutes, 10 seconds.

Right behind Kostka was the women's winner, Victoria Chang, timed in 18:11.
