Taking the floor again

The Hawaii Flooring Association will continue to push for changes to help small business and reduce the number of unlicensed contractors, said Norman Shimabukuro, recently re-elected for a second two-year term as association president.

"Our goals remain the same. We want to increase the industry standards by continuing education in management and installation," Shimabukuro said.

The 67-member association wants to expand its size and continue lobbying at the Legislature for lower taxes and changes to ease the workers compensation burden.

Shimabukuro has 30 years experience in the flooring business, including 15 years as president of Floors of Hawaii. While in the U.S. Army for three years, he was stationed in Kansas and competed in swimming.

Shimabukuro and his wife, Verna, reside in Maunaloa. They have two adult sons, Eric and Todd.
