Hawaiian language
goes on Internet

Slowly, the Hawaiian language is taking root on the Internet.

At the University of Hawaii-Hilo, Keola Donaghy, the network administrator, or luna keleka'a'ke, for the Hawaiian Language Center, is putting together an on-line dictionary.

If you thumb over to http://kopahela.uhh.hawaii.edu/OP/dictionary/ you can enter either a Hawaiian or English word for translation. The dictionary is modest, Donaghy admits, but a unique first step.

The layout and presentation are clear, the site loads quickly and offers a clear view of the Hawaiian language, without any heavy-handed political overtones.

The center also has just won agreement from Apple Computer, allowing UH-Hilo to translate the Macintosh operating system into Hawaiian.

When that is completed, you will have a computer running all Hawaiian, all the time, he says.

Until then, you can peruse several Hawaiian language newspapers and other publications at the main site: http://kopahela.uhh.hawaii.edu/op/.
