Forecasters cancel
high-surf warnings

The National Weather Service today canceled a high-surf advisory for the north and west shores of the Hawaiian chain.

Forecasters said surf of six feet was expected this morning on the north shores.

The weekend end's high surf, which resulted in waves up to 15 feet on Oahu's North Shore on Saturday, was generated by a storm that passed about 1,000 miles north of the island.



Hanauma Bay reopens after
jellyfish retreat

Hanauma Bay was reopened today after being closed yesterday because of an invasion of stinging box jellyfish.

Meanwhile, six people were reported stung by jellyfish at Kuhio Beach yesterday.

The invasion, which generally occurs nine days after a full moon, is expected to continue through the end of the week.



Victim of parachute accident identified

A 25-year-old Mililani man killed in a skydiving accident Saturday at Dillingham Airfield has been identified as Fred Sammis. The veteran skydiver reportedly opened his parachute but landed hard and died of massive injuries.

The death came less than a month after the state grounded four skydiving operations at the airfield because of safety questions.



2 District Court judges appointed
to new terms

Two District Court judges have been appointed to new terms, to end in 2002.

The Judicial Selection Commission granted petitions for the retention of Family Court Judge Douglas McNish. Also retained was Tenney Z. Tongg, a judge in the First Judicial Circuit.

Man shot in robbery;
two suspects arrested

Charges of attempted murder are pending against two men arrested yesterday in the shooting of a 66-year-old Moiliili man.

The victim was wounded in the leg while trying to flee from his Date Street residence.

Police, meanwhile, are looking for a third suspect in the case, an apparent robbery attempt gone awry.

Both suspects in custody are 19 years old. One is a Kalihi resident; the other lives in Waialae-Kahala.

The victim underwent surgery yesterday at Queen's Hospital.

The hospital today was not releasing information on the patient's condition at the request of police because a suspect is still at large.

The victim was confronted by the suspects at his residence shortly before 11 a.m., said Detective Kelley Yamauchi.

Neighbors heard him yelling, "What you doing, what you doing?" she said. Then they heard a gunshot.

Two of the suspects entered the residence while a third man stood watch. As the second man went in, the victim tried to flee and was shot, police said.



2-year-old recovering from knife wound

A 2-year-old girl, allegedly stabbed by a 64-year-old Ewa Beach man Saturday, was listed in good condition today at Kapiolani Hospital.

Deborah Tuuga and her 8-year-old cousin, James, were playing in their back yard Saturday afternoon when a neighbor allegedly attacked them with a sugarcane knife.

He also allegedly attacked Deborah's mother, Ramona, as she tried to help the children, police said.

Ramona Tuuga, 34, and the boy were treated at Queen's Hospital Saturday and released.

Police expected the suspect to be charged today. He was booked on three counts of attempted murder.

Police were still trying to determine a motive.



Investigation continues in
Chinatown 'ice' fight

A 44-year-old Honolulu man who allegedly slashed another man in Chinatown on Saturday night has been released pending further investigation.

The suspect allegedly slashed the 20-year-old victim twice in the abdomen during a fight over an "ice" pipe.

Witnesses chased the suspect to the corner of Maunakea and Kukui streets, where police arrested him for attempted murder.

The victim was listed in fair condition at Queen's Hospital.



Three shotgun blasts hit
Waipahu residence

Police are investigating a shooting incident Friday night in Waipahu in which someone fired three shots from a shotgun at a family residence on Kipou Street.

The incident was reported at 11:12 p.m. Police have no suspects or leads.



Federal drug charges filed
after crack seizure

A 33-year-old California man arrested Friday night at Honolulu Airport has been charged with a federal drug trafficking offense.

John Veselovsky of Torrence, Calif., was arrested by police Narcotics/Vice Division officers, who allegedly seized a kilogram of crack cocaine with a street value of $61,000 from his luggage.

Police yesterday made another bust at the airport, seizing $32,000 worth of crystal methamphetamine from a 41-year-old Hilo man.

Security officers at the interisland terminal said they discovered plastic bags containing the 6.8 ounces of "ice" inside a leather boot packed in a carry-on.

Another Big Island man, 36, also was arrested for questioning.
