Who pinched
the 13-lb. pincher?

ONE of the gimmicks dreamed up to stir interest in watching Monday Night Football at Steck's Restaurant in the Kahala Mall was the brainchild of owner Wayne Steckelberg. At halftime each week, customers guess the weight of a live Maine lobster he brings in, and the one closest to the actual weight gets to take it home or have it cooked and served on the spot. This week Steckelberg, who also owns the East Honolulu Pet Hospital, selected a huge 13-pounder in Chinatown and headed out to Kahala. But the lobster, perhaps resentful of being plucked from his watery tank and placed unceremoniously in a shopping bag, was ripping it to shreds. Steck transferred it to a sturdier Liberty House box and noted that the creature had broken a rubber-band restraint on its claws. So when chef Bones Yuen discovered that someone had swiped the prize from Steck's back seat before it could be put on display, he was pulling for the lobster to wreak some havoc, hoping he'd give new meaning to the term "light-fingered thief." ...

SORRY to report that Jameson's By The Sea and Jameson's Kona owner Ed Greene and wife Debbie are splitting ... John Cushnie, G.M. of the Ala Moana Hotel, just presented Alexi Dankeith of Variety School with a check for more than $13,000, a charitable donation from the hotel's annual Torch Ginger Invitational Golf Tournament. Cushnie said that presenting the check was the best part of the day, because he felt at times his score would top the amount of the donation ...

WHILE Oktoberfests are going on at various spots in town, there's one that promises to be a wee bit different. Don Murphy is staging an "O'Toberfest" Saturday at 5 p.m. at his Murphy's Bar & Grill downtown. Despite the name, the fare will be German and there'll be an oom-pah-pah band, though at some point it'll make way for Celtic music and the Irish in all of us will take over ...

Silent and deep no more

DURING World War II when the USS Bowfin (SS-287) ran silent, ran deep on secret patrols throughout the South Pacific, the crew on board - unlike their above-the-waterline brethren - missed out on port calls in paradise. That's now a relic of the past, like the Bowfin. On Tuesday, Capt. Alex Tyree (USN Ret.) and other Bowfinners, in town for a reunion on the submarine museum, were treated to the sights and sounds of the South Pacific at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Better late than never for 81-year-old Capt. Tyree and his mates ...

IT'S not often that you see New Yorkers showing up for dinner at the St. Regis Hotel and wearing aloha attire, but many did this week. Sheraton Hawaii was presenting a dinner for some of the country's top travel writers and editors, and invites to the event were attached to Hilo Hattie aloha shirts, in honor of the shirt's 60th anniversary. David Reardon of the Orchid at Mauna Lani and Tom Wong of the Royal Hawaiian presented an eight-course meal with all the seafood, produce, venison, chocolate, coffee and spices flown in from Hawaii on that day ...

THAT one-hour special Emme Tomimbang has been working on, "Memories of Hawaii Five-O," is now set to air here Oct. 20 and 27 on KHNL-TV. Besides interviews with most of those featured in the show, including James MacArthur, Emme did behind-the-scenes interviews with Marie Lord and Rose Freeman, widow of the show's creator, Leonard Freeman. Sadly, one who won't be on the show: series star Jack Lord ...

Hawaiian Air head grounded

LET me hasten to explain the headline above. Bruce Nobles, CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, was "grounded" by more than 65 airline personnel during an outing at Ultrazone, the hot laser tag action adventure game. Nobles and his team went to Ultrazone for a quarterly management get-together and the managers took great pleasure in relentlessly targeting and "zapping" Nobles in the laser tag game. You can check out Ultrazone in the Ilikai Hotel. It's available for company outings and private parties and loads of fun ...
