In a courtroom packed with police officers and their families, Ezra said: "Think about your duties and responsiblities and the oath you took. Think about all the people who look to you for protection."
"A badge is not a license to beat prisoners. It is not a license to exceed and break the law."
Ezra said he's sending a message that "no one is above the law, not the president, not a federal judge, not a federal prosecutor, not any lawyers."
In addition to the prison time in Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama - a low-security prison farm - Won was ordered to pay one-third of medical costs, about $2,000, to his Jan. 4, 1995, beating victim, Ivan Folau.
In an emotional plea to the judge, Won apologized, saying "What I have done is wrong." Unable to hold back tears, he said, "I did not do the right thing."
Won, 35, is the last of three officers involved in the beating incident to be sentenced. Former HPD Sgt. Clyde Hayami has already been sentenced to a 4-year, 9-month prison term; Keith Flynn got probation.
U.S. Attorney Steve Alm said the sentences for all three former officers were "appropriate."
Ezra, a former military police officer, said he will recommend Won begin serving his prison time Jan. 6, so he can spend the holidays with his family.
After sentencing, Won hugged his wife and 6-year-old daughter.
