Former University of Hawaii guard Trevor Ruffin has signed a contract with the New Jersey Nets and is currently in the team's training camp in Tampa, Fla.

Ruffin played for the Philadelphia 76ers last season and tied for the team lead in assists with 4.4 per game.

The 26-year-old Buffalo, N.Y., native played for the Rainbows for two seasons. He averaged 12.7 points per game in 1992-93 and 20.8 in 1993-94 at UH. He led the Rainbows into the NCAA tournament during his senior season.

The 6-1, 200-pound guard has played for the Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers, Vancouver Grizzlies and the 76ers in the NBA.

"He is in a very good situation right now, backing up (point guard) Robert Pack," said his agent Warren Legarie. "For the first time in his NBA career, he will be playing in a similar system to the one in Hawaii.

"And with (New Jersey head coach) John Calipari, he will have someone who coaches and teaches."

The NBA season opens Nov. 1.
