James B. Ramstead, 66,
Hopaco general manager

James B. Ramstead, 66, of Diamond Head, retired general manager for Hopaco, died Sunday at home.

Ramstead, who had been regional manager of Boise Cascade Container Division in California, moved to Hawaii in 1977 to become Hopaco general manager.

He was an an All-American center on the Stanford University basketball team in 1951 and was recently nominated to the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame.

Ramstead had served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, Junior Achievement of Hawaii and Rotary Club of Hawaii.

He is survived by wife Diane; son Rick; and daughter Julie.

Memorial service: 4 p.m. today at Thurston Chapel at Punahou School, 1601 Punahou St. Aloha attire. Donations suggested to the American Heart Association.


Marciana P. Ablao, 98, of Ewa Beach died Sept. 17 in St. Francis-West Hospital. Robert "Bob" Baxter, 90, of Kailua died Monday in Kaiser Hospital. He is survived by companion Bertha A. Manuel "Maka" Cariaga, also known as Flash, 63, of Kealakekua, Hawaii, a self-employed woodcarver and coffee picker, died Monday at home. He is survived by companion Anna Keohuloa; sons Victor, Eric, Edward and Timothy De Peralta; daughters Cynthia Bartel, Sally De Rego, Sandra Galigo, Aloha Cariaga, and Evelyn, Loretta and Pamela De Peralta; brothers John, Alberto and William; sisters Marie Green and Mabel Simmons; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Marcelino M. Francisco, 78, of Hanapepe, Kauai, a mechanic repair shop proprietor, died Monday in Wilcox Hospital. He is survived by wife La Paz; daughter Erlinda Hazelrigg; sons Dale, Van and Darrell; brothers Conrado and Juan; sisters Maria Alquiza, Olivia F.
