Goodrum came to Hawaii in 1988 as an account executive with Prudential Bache Securities. He joined Wedbush Morgan in 1992 as Honolulu office manager.

His experience in California included five years with Trans America Financial Resources in Los Angeles. Goodrum earned a bachelor's degree in economics at the University of California at Los Angeles and was a pilot in the Air Force for nine years while rising to the rank of captain.
