Police suspect foul play in a car fire on the H-1 freeway in Makakilo early today that left an occupant burned beyond recognition.

Passing motorists spotted the car burning at 2:25 a.m. on the grass medial two miles east of the Makakilo Drive overpass, said police Sgt. Steven Kitsu.

He said the car was engulfed in flames when the passers-by opened the door after seeing someone unconscious inside. By the time firefighters arrived, the car had burned to the ground, Kitsu said.

The beige Subaru station wagon was headed toward town.

Its two rear tires had melted off their rims and none of the windows remained. The front windshield had shattered.
