
The report, based on 1995 figures, found that the percentage of Hawaii residents living in poverty climbed to 10.3 percent, up from 8.7 percent in 1994 and 8 percent in 1993.
While still below the national level of 13.8 percent - and below rates for all but a dozen other states - Hawaii's poverty rate was climbing faster than those of all but a handful of states. Most states, in fact, saw a decline in their poverty rates. Nationally, the rate dropped from 14.5 percent the previous year.
A family of four living on $15,569 or less a year is considered at the poverty level.
Similarly, the report found that the median household income in Hawaii, while still higher than in every state except Alaska and New Jersey, is declining at a time when incomes nationwide and in most states are on the rise.
Hawaii's 1995 median income was $42,851, down about $2,000 from 1993. Nationally, the median income rose by about $1,000 to $34,076.
