'Ukulele plucker cited
for loitering

FUNNY, but entertainer Keith Haugen never thought of himself as a "loiterer." Not until the other day, that is, when he was rousted from Kahala Mall, near Star of the Sea School where he teaches. Haugen stops by the Mall nearly every day, and after shopping at Longs had sat down to wait for his wife and was plucking his ukulele when an overzealous security officer told him to move on. He did so, but couldn't resist telling the young guard who he was and inviting him down to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel to hear him perform. "It was a humbling experience," Haugen stated. "If he'd complained about my ukulele playing I could have understood, but loitering?" ...

INCIDENTALLY, Haugen, who has learned the Hawaiian language to both sing and speak it, was amused to see a new Tokyo-based magazine called "Eye-Ai." The word "'ai," with an okina, means "eat" in Hawaiian, but without the diacritical mark it's a street term for having sex. Which is why Haugen always chuckles when he sees the UH Campus Center cafeteria called "Kahea Ai," which they apparently think means "Call to eat." Well, you get the idea ...

BACK in town to work with Emme Tomimbang on her "Hawaii Five-O" one-hour special, a kind of "Where are they now?" of the cast of the smash hit CBS series of the late '60s and '70s, is James MacArthur. The last week of October will be a busy one for MacArthur, who played "Danno" on "Five-O." On Oct. 25 he'll attend the Helen Hayes Acting Awards fund-raising banquet in Washington, D.C., named for his late mother. And the next day he'll be attending the "Hawaii Five-O" reunion convention in Burbank, Calif., before flying back to the islands for the Honolulu end of the reunion Oct. 29 to Nov. 2. Some time in late October, Emme's special on the series will run, along with interviews she did with various people who appeared in or were connected with the series ...

Bachelor No. 1

Fred Piluso
NOW that John Kennedy Jr. has taken a bride, the search is on for a successor. Cindy Adams, gossip columnist for the N.Y. Post, says there is no No. 2 and with John-John gone, the rest are all pretenders. Scruples should count for something, so in Hawaii, at least, you'd have to place Fred Piluso somewhere near the top of the list of most eligibles. He owns Scruples nightclub, you see, and as an avid car collector believes in life in the fast lane in every sense of the word. He's currently in Hollywood and his date at Spago Monday night was up and coming local actress Lee Doversola, whose mother is casting director Margaret Dover-sola. Along with restaurateur Nicky Blair and his ladyfriend, they were guests of Tony Curtis and g.f. Jill, and checked out L.A.'s newest "in spot" (which changes weekly), Drais Restaurant. They had cocktails there with Jack Gilardi (ex-hubby of Annette Funicello), Paul Sorvino (papa of Oscar-winning Mira Sorvino) and Jack Lafferty, who gained his measure of fame as the butler of tobacco heiress Doris Duke, and who made out in her will ...

PASSING by United Rent-All's marquee at McCully and Beretania, Eddie O'Toole read the following: "My boss told me to change this sign, so I did." O'Toole cackled, "Well, he did as he was told. He'll probably get a bonus." ... Huge honor for Ritz-Carlton Kapalua - it was named "Best Hotel in Hawaii" and No. 4 in the world's "100 Best Hotels" in Travel & Leisure magazine. It ranked higher than any other Ritz-Carlton in the world.

Art imitates life imitates art

Gary Anderson
THERE was just a hint of deja vu in the Avis ad in yesterday's paper. In the ad, actor Gary Anderson is running through an airport on behalf of Avis. You got just the hint of a flashback to O.J. Simpson racing through an airport on behalf of Hertz. Especially if you saw the Diamond Head Theatre production of "Arsenic and Old Lace" in which Anderson played the murderous Dr. Einstein. Jay Leno on the difficulty of seating a civil jury that knows nothing about the Simpson murder case: "Why don't they just use the original jury?" Ouch! ...
