Those who walk, not roll,
have right to sidewalks

QUESTION: On Saturday, my wife and I were walking on the sidewalk near the Ala Wai Canal. There were an adult and teen-agers on rollerblades behind us. Those obnoxious people had a whistle and were telling us to get off the sidewalk. After they passed they said they had the right of way. Is this true?

ANSWER: No, says Honolulu police Lt. Carl Godsey of the Waikiki substation. Rollerblading, roller skating, bike riding and skateboarding are not allowed on the sidewalks in Waikiki.

Only bicycling is allowed on the roadways in Waikiki.

The police define Waikiki's boundaries as the Ala Wai Canal bridge to Kapiolani Park and Kapahulu Avenue and the Ala Wai Canal to the ocean.

Godsey recommends that people who are being bothered by rollerbladers in Waikiki call 911. A beat officer will be sent to investigate. Violators will be cited, he said.
