Resident of Hawaii Kai
wants longer HOV lane

QUESTION: The HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) lane on Kalanianaole Highway used to start at Hawaii Kai Drive and worked very well even during the widening project. We Hawaii Kai residents would like to see it begin at Hawaii Kai again. The traffic backs up every morning coming out of Hawaii Kai and lightens up only after the HOV begins. Who can I contact and what is the process for getting this change made?

ANSWER: You should contact state Transportation Director Kazu Hayashida; 869 Punchbowl St.; Honolulu, HI 96813. However, the state transportation department says there are the same number of lanes of town-bound traffic available now during the morning rush-hour traffic as there were during the road-widening project.

During the road-widening construction, there were three town-bound lanes - one was a temporary contra-flow lane from Hawaii Kai Drive to West Halemaumau Street. An HOV lane - which is restricted to vehicles with more than one passenger - begins at West Halemaumau Street, adding a fourth town-bound lane during rush hour.

Ross Smith, transportation department spokesman, said it is highly unlikely the state would extend the HOV lane from West Halemaumau Street to Hawaii Kai because it would create a traffic hazard in some areas.
