Mad Hatter
world of ceramics on display

You've heard of "throwing pots" as a way of shaping blobs of clay into smooth, rounded forms, but one ceramist physically throws pots.

"You can take anything and throw it," says artist Peter Murray, "on the stairs, at the side of a house ..."

The result is flattened, fluid-looking molten forms, a la Salvador Dali, and Murray's work can be seen at Coffee Time, 3506 Waialae Ave., through Saturday.

Just about the only thing you can't throw a pot at is a fence, says Murray, a '95 art graduate from the University of Hawaii. "It doesn't come off and it just ends up getting wet from the rain and melting even more."

Other Murray wares are inspired by "Alice in Wonderland," such as a Mad Hatter Tea Party set with a tea cup pouring out of a tea pot.

Murray, whose one dream is to "make the best, most interesting latte cups you've ever seen," faces the dilemma of all ceramists. That is, "Should I make stuff that I can use or stuff that I just want to make?

"My parents, my roommate, well, everybody wants dishes and Christmas is coming up," he said. "It's a tough choice to make."
