Students in grades 7 through 12 are invited to share real experiences about their efforts to combat drugs and violence in 450- to 500-word essays.
Students wishing to represent their schools should contact their English teacher for details. Entries must be submitted by Dec. 1.

The Dallas-based specialty retailer will award four students $5,000 scholarships and 20 others $1,500 scholarships in April 1997. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and a written demonstration of how sports and education have influenced the applicant's life.

Oahu and neighbor island finalists will vie for the title and thousands of dollars in scholarship awards in a January 1997 competition, with the state winner going on to competing in the national contest in Mobile, Alabama.
The national awards exceed $75,000, with $30,000 for America's Junior Miss. Hawaii's winner will receive a $4,000 cash scholarship to the college of her choice, as well as other prizes and awards. Karen Sabino, Hawaii's 1996 Junior Miss, is currently utilizing her scholarship at New York's Barnard College.

The contest is open to boys and girls, newborn through 12 years old.
More than $100,000 in modeling contracts and college scholarships will be offered to 40 finalists and grand prize winners throughout the United States.
Entry forms are available at all Kmart Portrait Studios and will be accepted through Oct. 31. With each purchase, the studios will provide two free portraits for contest entry.
All photos will be evaluated by a panel of Wilhelmina agents.
The Kid Search '96 finalists will be flown to New York City for a weekend competition leading to a $25,000 grand prize modeling contract and several $1,000 scholarships.
