YESTERDAY we mentioned that Michael Jordan and his wife spent 10 days enjoying the relative quiet and repose at the Ihilani Spa and Resort. If quiet and anonymity are what he was after, it's a good thing Jordan isn't heading there the first week of October. The place will be awash with celebs that week, there to attend the annual U.S. Olympic Committee awards fund-raising dinner and concert Oct. 5. Celebs will come from all sorts of fields, ranging from entertainment, movies and TV to the sporting world. Among those who'll be there are Olympians Karch Kiraly (beach volleyball), Lisa Leslie (women's basketball) and Jair Lynch (men's gymnastics), plus Flo-Jo Joyner and husband Al. Olympian talker Dr. Ruth Westheimer is slated to attend along with another famous M.D., "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" - that would be actress Jane Seymour. Many sports figures will be at the resort that week, including such stars as Walter Payton and James Worthy of football and basketball fame. The concert that evening will feature saxman Clarence Clemons (formerly with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band). Last year's event here raised over $150,000 for the USOC ... IT seems to happen every election year. I'm referring to a foul-up that causes delays in the counting of ballots or the announcing of returns to an eagerly awaiting audience. The Legislature apparently felt taking it out of the hands of the lieutenant governor's office and appointing a bureaucrat to be in charge of things would change all that. Wrong. Wouldn't it be nice to add a proviso to that appointment? The person in charge should get out election results promptly and correctly - or resign ...
ALOHA magazine publisher Rick Davis says rumors of his demise are way off base. He merely had his prostate removed (no longer is he "perfect") and is recuping at home with all the difficulties such an operation brings about. Other than that, reports Davis, he's just fine ...
THE "Today" show's Bryant Gumbel got a playful slap from his co-hostess Ann Curry yesterday when discussing the No. 1 and No. 2 box office hits in the country. "By the way," deadpanned Gumbel, "'Last Man Standing' isn't a sequel to 'First Wives Club.'" A pity that the No. 6 film wasn't No. 3 - then they could have had a natural follow-up with "First Kid."
RETIRED Gen. Fred Weyand, former U.S. Army Chief of Staff, was surprised on his 80th birthday with a bash at the Schofield Officers Club. He stood ramrod straight throughout the musical flourishes and tributes, then took a big breath and extinguished the 80 candles without requiring assistance from the fire marshal ... Former Chamber of Commerce president Paul Lister is now head of the Ronald W. Reagan Scholarship Program at Eureka College in Illinois; the former president is its most famous alum ...
VISITORS to Bishop Museum this month got a sneak preview of a forthcoming book by former Honolulu news reporter Jay Hartwell and photog Anne Landgraf, "Na Mamo: Hawaiian People Today." Photos from the book were used in an exhibit at the museum but are now en route to Maui where they'll be on display at Lahaina Cannery Mall from Oct. 5 through November, when Hartwell's book arrives. Web users can access info on the book at www.lava.net/namamo/ ...
