Freitas no shoo-in to start

By Paul Arnett
Star-Bulletin

University of Hawaii head coach Fred vonAppen had his reservations all week about starting Glenn Freitas at quarterback, and yesterday's practice did little to clear the picture.

"He didn't throw the ball well today," vonAppen said. "We shot some film, so I want to take a look at it. He threw the ball miserably on Tuesday, better on Wednesday and not very good today.

"I don't know if that means his shoulder is sore or he's just not throwing very well. He wouldn't tell us, so they've got to go push on it and pull on it, and see if he winces."

If he does, look for Josh Skinner to start for his second game in a row. If not, then Freitas will get the nod.

"I just had a bad practice, that's all," Freitas said. "I'm not hurting at all. The shoulder feels fine."

Stanford transfer Tim Carey took part in his first practice, throwing the football during scout team work.

"It's amazing how everybody threw a little bit better with Tim out there," vonAppen said. "He'll bring the best out in our guys. We're glad he's here."

INJURY UPDATE

There are several Hawaii players not feeling very well. VonAppen announced yesterday that strong safety Doe Henderson (calf) is out as well as wide receiver and kick returner Gerald Lacey (hip).

Also listed as questionable is top offensive lineman Shane Oliveira, who hasn't practiced this week because of back spasms and sore Achilles tendons.

"I can play, but I don't think it's fair to (Sione) Tafuna because he has practiced all week," Oliveira said. "I've had problems since the spring with my back and heels.

"If I can sit out this week and get better, that might be the best thing. But if the coaches need me, I'll be in there."

Henderson said he's definitely out with a torn calf muscle and added, that contrary to reports, he wouldn't be playing wide receiver this season. Chris Shinnick replaces him in the secondary.

The injured players join tight end Gary Ellison (knee), defensive lineman Brian Chapman (knee) and linebacker Paulo Kamakeeaina, already out for this game.

SPECIAL TEAM CHANGES

With Lacey and Henderson sidelined, defensive backs Eddie Klaneski and Steve Laulu enter the picture on special teams.

Klaneski will replace Henderson on punt returns, while Laulu will take Lacey's spot on the field on kickoffs. Eric Hannum will punt for the remainder of the season while Chad Shrout stays home for personal reasons.
