New computer program lets you be the architect. Broderbund

Dream home
at your fingertips, keyboard

Dreaming up a new home or a new addition to your house is always the easiest, cheapest and most pleasurable part of home improvement.

The computer software company, Broderbund makes the process even easier with its latest program, 3D Home Architect Edition 2.

Your computer lets you become the architect and building cost estimator as you describe the walls, windows, floors and fixtures for your new construction. The program is simple enough to have you up and drafting in a half hour, although you need to do some hard work if you want to come up with plans to give to a contractor.

If you don't mind borrowing, 3D Home Architect comes with hundreds of pre-drawn plans that let you cut and paste portions into your new plan. There is a virtual camera that allows you to walk through your creation and another tool that puts custom furniture into the frame.

Once finished, the plan allows you to plug in the local costs of the needed materials and generate a spread sheet telling you how much that choice rehab is going to cost.

And even if you're not ready to build a house, the program lets you dream, too.
