A bridge so far

Pearl Harbor bustled with cranes and construction activity yesterday as work on the Ford Island Bridge continued. Navy officials say the 4,700-foot, $78 million structure, connecting the island with the Halawa shoreline, should be completed by May of 1998. The bridge will include a retractable pontoon to allow large ships to pass.
