State commission was right
to keep Barbers as airport

Congratulations to the state commission for its vote to keep Barbers Point as an alternate airfield for Oahu. This was the only sensible decision.

Tearing out a multimillion-dollar runway already working and in place would be extreme folly. Oahu needs a general aviation airport to take the traffic load off of Honolulu International.

Also, the two-mile-long runway is needed as an emergency air strip in case the main airport is ever closed down due to hurricane, aircraft crash or whatever.

The whiners living in Kapolei knew there was an airport nearby when they bought their property, so their complaints are moot.

Supporting a Con Con
is good reason to vote

This year Hawaii voters have the opportunity to change the face of government and the direction of our future from political stagnation.

I do NOT mean electing politicians to serve in an impotent Legislature. We have the opportunity to convene a Constitutional Convention.

The Con Con is a powerful tool to correct inequalities, establish new standards, and amend or repeal outdated standards. The Constitutional Convention process is 100 percent in the hands of voters.

If there is a single reason to vote this year, vote yes to convene a Con Con.

Smyser was able to convey
pride of being an American

A.A. Smyser's Sept. 3 column, "One of America's proudest moments," was simply great. I just wish our young people were more attuned to what America is all about.

I hope that some parents have clipped this article and posted it on the family's bulletin board. Thanks, Mr. Smyser.
