Park sign in Mililani
wrong - dogs allowed

QUESTION: As a Mililani resident and a dog owner, I found with interest the article on Oahu parks that allow dogs if they are on a leash. However, one of the parks mentioned in Mililani, the Mililani Neighborhood Park at 94-245 Kaloapau St., has at least two signs forbidding animals.

Please check and let me know if dogs are allowed at that park. And if they are, why does the sign say the opposite?

Also, if possible, I'm very interested to know how these parks were chosen and if more parks can be added to that list.

ANSWER: The sign at Mililani is incorrect and will be corrected, said Patti Nagao, city parks spokeswoman. Mililani is one of 33 parks that allow dogs as long as they are on a leash. There is no move to amend that list.

Nagao said the idea behind the list is to give each area at least one park where people can exercise their animals as long as they are on a leash. However, the city has shied away from allowing such activities at parks that are highly used.

The parks where leashed dogs are allowed are:

District I, Honolulu: Kamole Park, 1451 Kamole St.; Manoa Triangle, Manoa and East Manoa roads; Moiliili Triangle, Beretania and S. King streets.

Also, Nehu Playground, 5231 Nehu Place; Pukele Playground, 1415 Pukele Ave.; and Wailupe Valley Playground, 969 Hind Uka Drive, Wailupe Valley.

District II, West Honolulu: Aiea Recreation Center, 99-350 Aiea Heights Road; Kalihi Valley Field, 1911 Kamehameha IV Road; and Kamamalu Playground, 1440 Queen Emma St.

District III: Leeward/Central Oahu: Ewa Beach Community Park, 91-955 North Road; Honowai Playground, 94-660 Honowai St., Waipahu; Iliahi Playground, 2021 California Ave., Wahiawa; Kaalia Park, 150 Kilani Ave., Wahiawa; Maili Playground, 87-360 Kulaaupuni St., Waianae; Makaha Valley Field, 84-730 Manuku St., Waianae; Manana Neighborhood Park, 1550 Kuahaka St., Pearl City.

Also, Mililani Neighborhood Park, 94-245 Kaloapau St.; Mililani Waena Park, 95-590 Naholoholo St.; Palisades Playground, 2299 Auhuhu St., Pearl City; Pearl City Kai Playground, 785 Hoomaemae St.; Pililaau Field, 85-166 Plantation Road, Waianae; Waimalu Playground, 98-375 Moanalua Road, Aiea; Waipahu Recreation Center, 94-230 Paiwa St.; and Whitmore Playground, 1259 Whitmore Ave., Wahiawa.

District IV, Windward Oahu: Waimanalo District Park, 41-415 Hihimanu St.; Heeia Park, 46-220 Haiku Road; Kamananui Playground, 67-369 Alahaka Place, Waialua.
