Carey ready to join in
on practice field

Tim Carey dropped by during the last half of yesterday's workout after spending most of the day enrolling in school.

The newest member of the University of Hawaii football team was a little surprised to learn that several of his Stanford University credits wouldn't be accepted by the local institution.

"That's pretty amazing, isn't it?" Rainbows head coach Fred vonAppen said after the light practice at Cooke Field.

"Stanford is one of the top five academic universities in the country. If you think about it, something is basically wrong with this school not accepting credits from a university like Stanford."

Carey seemed to take it in stride. Because he hadn't received his meal card, the fourth-year quarterback was more concerned about eating.

"I'll be looking for the nearest Taco Bell," Carey said. "I couldn't believe one taco here was 99 cents. Sometimes, you can get three for that price in California."

Welcome to Hawaii.

Carey landed at Honolulu International Airport early Sunday evening. He'll have to sit out this season because he transferred from one Division I program to another. But don't think he'll be spending the coming days soaking up the sun at Waikiki.

VonAppen plans to use his quarterback wisely.

"He will help some of our young quarterbacks with their transition into our system," vonAppen said. "He'll also be in the wings running the scout team offense.

"He was recruited to Stanford while I was on the staff there. He was an enormous talent coming out of high school. Things have not worked out for him there.

"He approached us. We didn't approach him. He's a good kid with a lot of character. We'll get him into the competitive mix and find out if he's the guy next year."

Carey left Stanford a week ago after current Cardinal head coach Tyrone Willingham named sophomore Chad Hutchinson as his top quarterback exiting fall camp.

The Cardinal struggled over the weekend, losing to Utah at home by a touchdown.

"I didn't watch the game," Carey said. "All of that's in my past. I'm ready to come here and do what I can to help this team win."

Injury update

Senior quarterback Glenn Freitas not only separated his shoulder, but broke the pinkie finger on his right hand as well.

He will be out at least a week and possibly more until he's able to grip a football again.

"He could be out several weeks with an injury like that one," vonAppen said. "It's a shame because Glenn has worked hard to be our top quarterback."

Freshman Josh Skinner will take his place. Johnny Macon is No. 2 and redshirt freshman Hunter Young is third. VonAppen said John Gurasich will be redshirted.

The Rainbows welcomed back to practice running back Carlos Shaw (ankle), right offensive guard C.B. Wentling (ankle), fullback Tony Thomas (shoulder), wide receiver Gerald Lacey (hip pointer) and running back Paul Purdy (shoulder).

Those players missed last Saturday's game with Ohio University. Defensive lineman Brian Chapman wasn't as fortunate. He underwent arthroscopic surgery yesterday to his left knee.

He also had it hyperextended in the loss to the Bobcats. Top tailback Jade Charles will be out at least a month as well with a nasty hamstring pull.

Shrout rejoins team

Punter Chad Shrout likely will join the team Thursday during a layover in San Francisco.

The sophomore has spent the past two weeks with his mother, who had open-heart surgery after suffering a heart attack.

Shrout returned to Lancaster, Calif., the night before the season opener with Boston College. His younger brother will be taken care of by relatives while his mother recovers.

"We look for him to join us on our layover in San Francisco," vonAppen said. "That's good for us because he hit a 78-yarder against Wyoming last year in probably the only highlight in that game."

Freshman Eric Hannum has been busy filling in for Shrout. In two games, he has punted 17 times for an average of 40.5 yards.

He also had one blocked that was recovered and returned for a touchdown by the Bobcats in their 21-10 victory Saturday night.
