Tim Carey is on his way to the University of Hawaii.

The former Stanford University quarterback, who left the team on Tuesday after not being named the starter, will enroll in school here as quickly as he can.

His father confirmed last night from his home in Los Angeles that Carey had decided on Hawaii after reviewing his options Wednesday night.

Carey considered transferring to a Division I-AA team and playing right away. He even thought about Fresno State because that Western Athletic Conference school uses a similar offensive scheme.

But in the end, his relationship with UH head coach Fred vonAppen and offensive coordinator Guy Benjamin during their early days together at Stanford was the clincher.

"I felt like Tim was coming all along," vonAppen said last night. "That's what he told me on Tuesday and I believed him.

"I also told him he would have to fight for the job just like he did at Stanford and that we were perfectly happy with the guys we already had here.

"He said he understood. And under those circumstances, we're happy to have him with us because he was a great quarterback in high school who is very familiar with our offense."

Carey announced he was transfering to another school after Stanford head coach Tyrone Willingham said Tuesday that freshman Chad Hutchinson would be his starter against the University of Utah this weekend.
