Jason Kim relishes challenges

Jason Forrest Kim started every morning of his senior year taking 20 pills.

Kim was diagnosed with Crohn's disease last summer.

To fight the chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, his morning ritual includes separating 44 pills into three batches - 20 with breakfast, 10 with lunch and 14 with dinner.

"It was hard while I was (student body) vice president and with the activities," Kim said. "With the disease, I try not to let it take over me. ...I don't want to be home depressed."

After being told he was dyslexic in the second grade, Kim attended Variety School. By the sixth grade, he was at Niu Valley Elementary School.

He has participated in many school activities and service projects.

In the 10th grade he opened his own business, JFK Photography, and has taken pictures for "Hawaii Stars," weddings and parties, and the Celebrity Charity Birthday Party fund-raiser that earned $70,000 for Variety School.

"He's a really neat person," said counselor Nanette Umeda. "(He's) very giving of his time. Even if he was sick, he came (to school) and brought his papers. He was so diligent and so positive."

Kim won a $2,500 scholarship from the Discover Card and a Spirit Scholarship from Hawaii Pacific University, where he plans to take basic classes before transferring to a mainland college. He said he's eventually like to own his own company.
