In this case, adoption
may be simple procedure

My husband would like to legally adopt my 13-year-old son from a previous marriage to a Japanese national. My husband has raised my son since he was 2 years old. My ex-husband has already said to us that he would sign any adoption papers necessary since my husband and I are doing a fine job of raising our son.

I would like to know what the procedures are for adoption and whether it will be necessary to hire an attorney.

There isn't a need to settle any financial obligation such as child support since we have never asked for any nor will we in the future. All we would like to do is to have my husband legally adopt my son. Please advise.

Since this sounds like an uncontested adoption, Diane Kawakami, Family Court adoptions clerk, said you may not need an attorney and could try to do everything on your own.

She suggested that you either stop by her office at the Family Court or start the legal process by going to the state Supreme Court law library at 417 S. King St. Ask for the Hawaii adoption manual.

There are sample forms in the back of the manual. All the forms would have to be filed with the Circuit Court at 777 Punchbowl St.

Mahalo

"To the man on jet skis who rescued our son's 'Sylvester the Cat' raft when it was blown out of reach at Haleiwa Beach on Aug. 18. Before we knew it, it was nearly a mile out.

To our surprise a man fishing off of his jet ski retrieved it and returned it to shore. We didn't get his name, but we would like to extend a very warm mahalo." - The Nagais.

Auwe!!!

"To the East Oahu campaign sign wavers. I am an East Oahu resident who gets caught in traffic jams almost daily because of political sign wavers posted between Kahala Mall and Kalani High School.

"If campaigners would post themselves east of Kalani, traffic would not back up as it does now. I as a voter would be willing to vote for a candidate who is more sensitive to this issue.

Campaigners, please take heed for all of us who live in East Oahu."
